The typical minimum level of education to perform this job competently is equivalent to high school graduation and completion of a diploma training program at a college or technical school. This person requires an ability to understand, utilize and communicate specialized information in speech and written text.

It would typically require one to three years of related work experience and continuous learning to competently perform this job.

An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.

Job Description: Reporting to the Community Services Manager, the Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining Rocky View County cemeteries, parks, municipal reserves and environmental reserves. The Groundskeeper will be responsible to provide assistance to senior team members in the preparation of cemetery services.  Due to the sensitive nature of cemetery operations, a mature and positive attitude is necessary for this position.  A superior customer service attitude is required as there will be interaction with the public.
Key Accountabilities:

Core Accountabilities

  • Maintain grounds within the County to include: mowing, trimming, laying sod, watering, and landscaping; planting trees and shrubs; maintaining planted flowers and flower beds; and manual weed control.
  • Operate up to sixty (60) horse power tractors, riding and push mowers, rototillers, weed whips, chain saws, gators, half (½) ton and one (1) ton trucks.
  • Prepare sites for burial to include: opening and closing of ground; setting greens and lowering devices; and gravesite reclamation.
  • Install, maintain, level and repair flat memorial markers.
  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of nursery and / or greenhouse.
  • Assist with rodent control and herbicide application as required. Use backpack sprayers for weed control.
  • Perform and actively participate in tailgate safety meetings, hazard identification and mitigation as required.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Relevant college certificate in a related field preferred to include training in a recognized horticultural program of study.
  • Previous experience in a parks, cemetery, or related environment.
  • Possess a current Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate or the ability to obtain an Authorized Assistant license.
  • Demonstrate and execute safe and skilful operation of equipment at all times.
  • Physically able to perform demanding tasks on a continuous basis including: bending, shovelling, lifting up to twenty-seven (27) kilograms (60 pounds), and operating equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service, organizational, prioritizing, time management skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Clean current 5 year driver’s abstract and possess a valid class 5 driver’s license.
