Job Description:


Rocky View Fire Services is a composite fire service consisting of full time, volunteer and paid on-call employees.  This staffing model meets the needs of the County and reflects the commitment of both the County and that of its various communities and residents.  This commitment to a composite model is unwavering and must be understood and embraced by all Fire personnel

Position Summary:

The Deputy Fire Chief assists in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing the activities and operations of the Rocky View Fire Service; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; serves as Duty Officer for assigned shift and responds to incidents; assumes the role and responsibilities of Director of Emergency Management for Rocky View County; represents the Fire Service in the absence of the Fire Chief; and provides highly responsive and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief.

Key Accountabilities:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises operational area with an emphasis on efficiency, accuracy, quality and safety to ensure a superior service.
  • Represents the RVFS to other departments, Council, elected officials, and outside agencies; coordinates assigned activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations.
  •  Oversees and manages the purchasing, maintenance, and inventory of all fire related equipment, vehicles, and property.
  •  Identifies staffing requirements and coordinates staff and departmental workflow.
  •  Acts as Director of Emergency Management.
  •  Participates in staff hiring.
  • Conducts performance reviews and provides on-going feedback, mentoring and coaching,
  • Carries out disciplinary action in conjunction with the Fire Chief and Human Resources.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of RVFS goals, objectives, policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols and communicates pertinent information to staff Assists in directing emergency preparedness and other fire protection programs within the community.
  • Assesses training needs and leads training project teams.
  • Serves as on-call duty officer.
  • Manages the direction of assigned personnel and equipment at the scene of emergencies.
  • Participates in the development and administration of the RVFS budget; participates in and approves the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, training and supplies; monitors and approves expenditures and implements budgetary adjustments.
  • Identifies and responds to sensitive community and organizational issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Researches, analyzes, and evaluates service delivery methods and techniques.
  • Responds to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Aptitudes:

  • Knowledge of local, provincial, and national codes, bylaws and laws relating to fire prevention and principles.
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures and regulations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, team building, problem solving, conflict resolution, coaching and mentoring abilities.
  • Able to interpret and apply applicable federal, provincial, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Perform competently in dynamic, highly stressful situations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely, with tact, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Able to work extended hours and days to meet operational needs.
  • Able to maintain self discipline and professionalism at all times.
  • Possess the physical agility and stamina sufficient to perform all functions of this position in extremely adverse conditions.
  • Possess the ability to lift heavy equipment/loads as needed (May be expected to carry equipment weighing 20 to 40 lbs up stairs while wearing protective gear weighing at least 50lbs or to carry or rescue-drag individuals weighing over 200lbs).
  • Possess adequate vision, hearing, mobility and dexterity to perform routine and non-routine firefighting tasks.
  • Clean Criminal Record.
  • Clean Child Intervention Record Check.
  • Clean 5 year driver’s abstract.
  • Satisfactory completion of a medical examination.
