  • 5 years recent progressive experience in the health and safety discipline and possess an Occupational Health and Safety certificate, valid AMHSA or AASP Auditor’s certification.
  • Post secondary degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of COR requirements, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation and WCB required.
Job Description: The Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for coordinating the development, review, evaluation implementation, maintenance, education and communication of safety policies and practices throughout the organization.
Key Accountabilities:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, review and maintain the health and safety management system for Rocky View County (RVC) including policies, procedures and practices.
  • Ensure the County is informed and advised in order to maintain compliance with required Federal, Provincial, and Municipal legislation as well as Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Improve and implement current and future programs for: incident prevention, reporting and investigation; maintain records (provide statistical analysis and trending patterns); formal workplace inspections, emergency response planning; hazard identification, assessment and control; noise management; respiratory health management; driver evaluation and training; and New Hire Orientation and training.
  • Work in conjunction with the Risk Management Coordinator to identify risk and make recommendations for mitigation strategies.
  • Provide recommendations on appropriate preventative measures regarding training, provision of required equipment, and administrative practices.
  • Support, assist and collaborate with all levels of management and employees to create and sustain a “safety first” work environment.
  • Develop and implement ongoing training opportunities for all employees to become owners of the health and safety initiatives at the County.
  • Ensure the Certificate of Recognition (COR) is retained.
  • Act as a co-chairperson for the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Corporate Support Services team to create and implement Health and Safety initiatives in the workplace.
  • Keep updated on best safety practices, and recommend changes or improvements as necessary.
  • Manage and deliver quality programs to diverse groups across the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with required Federal, Provincial and Municipal legislation.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Ability to follow through and produce results in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Hold a valid and clean Class 5 vehicle operator’s permit (you will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract during interview process).
